Cross-post, PTP - lovely mom of cleft palate baby wants to begin nursing. The cleft lip and soft palate were repaired at four months, next surgery scheduled for nine months of age. Mom is pumping almost all of baby's food, always feeds cheek to bare breast, co-sleeps. I've suggested co-bathing, special code words for paci and a different special word for eating, watching videos of babies nursing, hanging out with other nurslings s-t-s with their moms, and body work for baby. Even suggested nursing another baby in front of her daughter. Little girl, after several weeks, did put her mouth on mom's nipple three times in a row - I think it was a one time event. I've shared Alice Farrow's website and Karleen Gribble's article on older adopted nurslings.
What else can mom do? She works full-time, her insurance will pay for the surgery, which limits her time with other nursing couples.
Thank you,
Laura McCormick, IBCLC
