Karleen's response about the temperature of the water was exactly what came
to my mind! I wondered if perhaps this mother's breast had been scaled by
water that was too hot. The temperature of the water should be comfortable
when an elbow is dipped into it... it should offer an 'ahhhhh...' feeling,
not an 'oh...that's hot!'. Hands are often very accustomed to hot water and
not a good guide of whether or not breasts can tolerate the temperature. An
elbow is a better guide, if a water thermometer is unavailable.

I myself recommend epsom salt soaks to many of my clients, with great
success. That said, on a few occassions, when they use too much or soak too
often (I recommend about 1/8th to 1/4 of a cup in a punch bowl 2x - 3x per
day, along with massage, till relieved... usually one or two days is
plenty), the salt can make mama's nipples or breast feel dry, but I have
never seen a rash or reaction.

Hope this helps.
