Iwonder if this is a result of valid advice being taken out of contxt. I found
that many nurses were reluctant to start a mom pumpng if her baby was separated
from her or for some reason not "allowed" or able to nurse. The feeling seemed
to be that it wasn't "worth it" as little would be obtained. In other cases the
attitude was, "We don't know how long the baby will be is NICU. She might be
able to nurse soon, so why start pumping? We should leave that milk for the
baby."
Starting to pump within the first 24 hours, preferably even the first hour, is
an appropriate recommendation when baby is not able to have access to the
breast. I wouldn't be surprised if some nurses have taken the "if a little is
good, more must be better"
approach and concluded that it would be good for all moms to start pumping in
the 1st 24 hours.
