I think someone mentioned the natural methods before. In Australia, we have the Billings Ovulation Method (cervical mucus monitoring) which is a method which needs to be learnt and followed precisely (and the rules complied with) for effectiveness. (I think in the USA, you call it the Creighton method). Learning the method actually gives a woman a good working knowledge of the hormones in her body (a desired outcome especially in this mother's situation). The Billings method is versatile because any woman can use it, of any age, at any time (younger, older, breastfeeding, during weaning, menopausal, etc). It is useful for any situation where there is any uncertainty about fertility or a need to avoid artificial methods for whatever reason. It therefore perfectly complements breastfeeding.
