Chertok's study (Chertok IRA. Reexamination of ultra-thin nipple shield
use, infant growth and maternal satisfaction. J Clin Nurs.
2009;18:2949–2955.) is often used to support the use of nipple shields
without additional pumping.
According to Table 2 in this paper, 41% of mothers were using formula at 2
weeks. At 2 weeks, 69% of mothers were using nipple shields.
I do not find this reassuring.
