Katherine writes..
I've never posted before, and am having trouble figuring out how to. I just
wanted to add in to the discussion started by Clare: Subject: Extremely
painful nipples - ongoing As I read, I wondered about the abscess and if
there is any chance that the abscess healed on the outside before it healed
on the inside and if having an Ultrasound would be beneficial to see if
there is anything underlying there. The pain is sending a very clear signal
that something is not right, and it sounds as if typical means of treatment
are running into dead ends.

Thank you for your suggestion and support Katherine.
The mother I posted about in this situation has today gone to see a breast
specialist Trevor Smith in Auckland to have an ultrasound! We have also
stopped the APNO after a search on side effects revealed that the bactroban
(the antibiotic component of the ointment) may cause burning, stinging,
itching and swelling in some folks when applied topically (her nipples are
stining and areolar are swollen) - this is really just a precaution as I
suspect the real culprit is continued bacterial infection within the breast.
She has also started (from yesterday) taking a whole clove of crushed garlic
in a spoonful of manuka honey once a day for five days (antibacterial and
anti-inflammatory properties) in lieu of starting another course of
antibiotics. This mum has an allergy to penicillin so was prescribed
erythromycin for the abscess (which here in NZ we would normally give
flucloxacillin for) I have had success with garlic with other mums with
resistant bacterial infection of the breast not responding to erythromycin
(who were allergic to penicillin)
Thank you all for your ideas and responces, mum is also very grateful to you
all.
