Hi all,
This is what I have so far regarding a breastmilk collection and storage policy for my unit:
-The research shows that breastmilk does not need to be frozen to prevent CMV, it doesn't kill the virus and those infants who did develop a CMV infection did not show any long term neurological differences compared to those infants who didn't have an infection.
-Give freshly expressed breastmilk if collected within the past 4 hours, refrigerate if being used within 3 days, otherwise freeze.
- Teach hand expression and alternate hand expression and pumping.
*But here's my question - How long should mom alternate hand expression and pumping with a pump, during the colostral phase? For 2 weeks? Forever? What do you think?
Is 3 days good for refrigerated milk? I know 5-7 is fine, but what is optimal?
Thanks again,
Tricia Shamblin, RN, IBCLC
