Try Barbara Wilson-Clay or Kay Hoover and the Breastfeeding Atlas.

also, this article has some references at the end:

seems to be epidemic.

I, personally, think that there is a cycle of nipple/areolar tissue degradation that starts to occur when mothers try various remedies for what they think is thrush, but is bacterial, or both and results in possible dermatitis with recurring bacterial infection due to constantly broken skin and possible fungal infection due to the moist conditions. Difficult to say in one breath and difficult to treat - and I am thinking that the inflammation has to be reduced asap for any healing to take place. Throw in some Raynaud's and = wow= major pain. These mothers who breastfeed through this deserve a medal. Thinking about it makes my nipples hurt.

Celina D, IBCLC, LLLL and who has been researching articles and publications on dermatitis and nipple soreness for a few hours... again.... just in time for our LLL mtg on breastfeeding challenges tomorrow am.
