Kristen, storytelling is an important part of learning. Telling positive stories such as this one about Dr Betty Coryllos's generous and effective presentation (even despite all the technical problems wth the IT) both honours Betty and gives heart to others on this list. Lovely story, and one that deserves telling and retelling. So often we discuss hitting brick walls, or encountering "train wreck" situations, which is valid and necessary for seeking ideas or simply to debrief. We also need to celebrate our successes, our good stories.

One more point, from other posts on infants refused frenotomy, is that I was suprised that the TT infants mentioned were described as feeding (effectively?) from bottles. I wonder if their mothers tried several? So often I notice ineffective bottle-feeding by babies with restricted tongue function. For instance, spilling milk from the mouth through poor seal, or making glugging noises that showed they were unable to control the fast flow (including on the allegedly "slow" Pigeon "Peristaltic"). Reviews of bottle and teats in online parent sites, which I check from time to time, indicate a lot of mothers are unhappy with how their babies manage bottle-feeding, and change teats till they find one that suits. The reviews are posted by the general population. Just curious.

Again, thank you, Kristen, for sharing the lovely story about how - in the loveliest way - the attitude towards frenotomy in your former hospital changed.

Allison in Wisconsin, I feel your pain. I went through just what you went
through, referring patients to providers who said no.... They would
come back to me bottle feeding and tell me that the doctor told them if it
was still a problem when their baby was one year old the doctor would
reconsider. This was the ENT, a good man with a good reputation. I tried
to talk to him a few times ... but .... So I got Dr. Betty Coryllos to come
give a talk at our monthly "lunch and learn"....
But I tell this story now because, yes an information sheet can be so
valuable, but in this case it took a real-live warm, engaging, experienced
person who happened to be a fellow physician to deliver the message
effectively to other physicians.
