As of next week, a woman's right to breastfeed in public will be protected by
law in the state of Texas. To celebrate this event there was an article
8-25-95 on the front page of the Austin American Statesman about
breastfeeding which was as strongly positive as any I've ever read in a
newspaper article. It talked about the passage of the new law, and featured
some Austin companies who have initiated workplace support programs of
various kinds to support employees who are pumping. Lower rates of
absenteeism, healthier babies, etc. were all mentioned, but I really liked
the emphasis on how good the mothers felt about receiving encouragement and
praise to do the best for their babies instead of the hassles many have (and
still do) encounter. The best part of the article was a really unabashed
statement that breastfeeding is a public health issue and that all segments
of society have an obligation to support it.
Thought you'd all enjoy hearing of some good media coverage about
breastfeeging for a change.
