There's only one study linking hydrogel pads (and actually they were
glycerin gel pads) with increased risk of mastitis, and the women in
this study were instructed to change the pad after every single feeding,
which might have disrupted healing. Other studies of various hydrogel
formulations did not find an elevated incidence of mastitis.
One important way to reduce the risk of mastitis is to have moms wash
damaged nipples with mild soap and water 2-3x a day (Verity Livingston's
research demonstrated this.)
