Dear Lactnet Friends:

Mothers who are diabetic are encouraged to breastfeed, to give some
protection to their babies from developing this chronic disease. In
addition, breastfeeding can reduce insulin doseage for some, and delay the
onset of Type II for those women with gestational diabetes.

A mother in diabetic ketoacidosis is one sick mamma; if she is in a coma,
she can be pumped to keep her flow going.

I am unaware of any research that would deny her milk to her infant.

warmly,
