I was asked for information, from some nurses at a local pediatricians office, on how to help moms whose culture encourages them to let sleeping babies lie. According to the nurse, moms who are Indian and follow cultural practices, especially if their own moms are influencing them, do not want to wake their newborns to feed and believe that babies should not be carried upright because this is believed to damage the spine. I am hoping that someone has worked with this population and can help me to help these moms in a way that respects their cultural practices and helps them to accept more skin-to skin and waking newborns to feed.
