Liz discusses an article I hope to get my hands on quite soon:
<<So she is saying that MAYBE the reason we have so much "GERD/GORD" being
diagnosed in infants in modern western cultures, and maybe the reason we
have so many excessively crying babies, is because the baby's biology was
not intended to have the infant be "left alone" for long periods of time,
un-held and un-BF. But the fact that we DO have so many excessively crying
baby's may, in fact, be a contributor to true GERD/GORD diagnosis>>
May I humbly suggest that "back in the day" when we had babies sleeping on
their tummies and car seats were used for cars that we didn't have nearly
as much GERD/GORD. We had "spitting." But nothing like what we see now.
And may I also posit that we really didn't have all that much GERD/GORD
until we invented drugs to "cure" it.
Sorta like we didn't have nearly as much Type II Diabetes until we invented
Metformin. And we weren't as worried about high cholesterol until the
statins came along. Also like we didn't worry nearly as much as we used to
about hypoglyemia in babies until we invented chem strips. Or low levels of
hyperbilirubinemia until we developed the bililight.
I'm not suggesting babies be put to sleep on their tummies. But it's
interesting to think about. Brian Vartabedian recommends that "tummy time" be
done a whole lot more than it is now. Many parents don't do it at all because
their babies "don't like it."
And -- I don't think we are leaving babies alone nearly as much as we did
last century -- particularly in the 20's thru the 60's. But GERD/GORD is
far more rampant now than then.
