I have permission to post.
Mom has multiple sclerosis and has previously managed the disease with Copaxone. She had a flare-up when baby was around 5 months and needed to have IV steroids. She pumped and dumped and then resumed breastfeeding. She is still not well and is in the midst of her worst flare-up. The doctor is recommending Gilenya. She is pretty sure that she will need to wean if she takes this medication. Her other options include interferons which are more compatible with breastfeeding but not as effective. Her baby is 8 months. She was hoping to make it to a year with nursing but feels that she needs to do something about her disease now.
I looked up this medication online. It isn't in my 2010 Hale. It is taken orally and has some pretty serious potential side effects. Does anyone know if there is any information about this medication's transfer into milk? Anyone know of any alternatives that would work as well? Is it possible to partially breastfeed with this med?
