Lisa writes: "I can't tell you how much I appreciate the support of
this group because I have lost sleep over this. I want to make sure I
alarm appropriately. It is a fine line to support mom during this
challenging time, while seeing potential medical issues that are
totally outside of my scope, especially with a pediatrician who is not
taking mom seriously. You gave me great suggestions that were within
my scope and helped me to help mom before her LC appointment.

When I saw mom and baby yesterday, I paid strong attention to the time
baby spent swallowing. About 10-15 minutes of swallowing during a 45
minute session. Baby had gained 1 oz in 24 hours on my scale. They
will see an LC today."

This is one of those times when LN works the way it's meant to,
providing a sounding-board for someone without a local group of
colleagues to confer with. I'm proud to be part of such a support
network, esp since I have made use of it to get support so many times
through the years I've subscribed.

Lisa, if you weren't there, who would be? What would be happening? I
hope the peer supporter system you are part of, has the good sense to
let you know how significant it is that you're there at all.

About the update on this baby: I would be very encouraged that he had
the energy to stay at breast for 45 minutes, and if the swallowing was
for several minutes at a time, with longer intervals without audible
swallows, one explanation is that he elicited several MERs simply by
staying on the breast, and was likely taking in small amounts of
fat-rich milk in between each MER. It's a great sign that he had
gained an ounce in one day. Here's hoping it continues. And while I
am relieved that he seems to have turned the corner, I am equally
disappointed that the pediatrician seems so very relaxed about him. I
wouldn't want a pedi who was pushing for lots of supplementation and
undermining the mother, but there is a happy medium and in my book
this pedi is too far on the unconcerned side of it.

I'm looking forward to the next update!
