Liz and Kathy,
I don't know what book you are referring to.
Do you have a name or author for the book? There are scores of books,
pamphlets,
flyers, You Tube videos and other media I haven't even heard of
on breastfeeding with similar advice. They are written by MDs, nurses,
IBLCLCs,
mothers, grandmothers, formula companies. They vary widely in terms of
their quality
of writing and the advice/information they give, not necessarily
correlated to the
qualifications of the person who wrote it.
Are we concerned that 49 pages isn't enough to contain the information
a mother
needs? Well written, how much more than 49 pages does a new mom need
to learn
the basics, and how much more than 49 pages is a new mom in a position
to
read before the next nursing? Does the book includes where to get more
info and when to consult a health care provider?
Advertising campaigns are designed to sell books and they are
developed by the
publisher's marketing department. The author has little if anything to
say about
how the book is marketed. It's not fair to evaluate the book based on
the advertising
campaign.
Without having read the book or seen the advertising campaign, I am
disturbed by our comments implying that one cannot breastfeed without
consulting
with an LC. Surely, a personal face to face assessment from a
qualified health
care provider is important when mother is having difficulty with
nursing, but
I'm sure (I hope) that many many women are able to nurse their babies
successfully,
even through some bumps, without the need to consult an expert. Is the
author of this
book, like so many others, including those written by us, trying to
give moms the tools
to breastfeed successfully on their own? Why does that disturb us?
What is it about
this book or this advertising campaign that is a problem?
