You really need to read the articles by Joy Noel-Weiss in the Int
Breastfeeding J. www.internationalbreastfeedingjournal.com/content/6/1/9
and the accompanying article on doing a study at your hospital. In these
articles Dr Weiss explains how the birth weight is basically inaccurate
and
a poor place to start counting the 10% from. The weight at 24 hours is a
better weight to use. Fascinating reading :-) Pat in SNJ

I second that (and third it, along with Jean C). I also think we need to
go back to weighing diapers to see exactly how much our babies are pooping
and peeing and how much diuresis is taking place. What is the point in
gauging percentage of weight lost if we aren't looking at the ounces of weight
lost? I realize in this day and age of high tech, that going back to
actually MEASURING output may seem a bit outdated. However, we are needlessly
supplementing babies who are simply diuresing the extra fluids obtained
during labor.
What happened to looking at BABIES rather than NUMBERS?
