Hmmmm, with respect, it depends on which info you're looking at. If
you follow global policy development on HIV and infant feeding from
1997 to 2009-10, you will see what, IMHO, is a very Western bias in
how infant feeding choice is presented to mothers in resource-poor
settings. The rationale is framed in language which appeals to
Western ideals of maternal autonomy and the rightness of mothers
choosing how they themselves want to feed their babies. This is a
very un-African perspective, but it seemed to be impossible to
persuade policy-makers to acknowledge that they were in fact coming
at the problem from their own pre-conceived rights-based Western
attitudes (private rights vs public good). It was only after 2006
when reports of such high infant mortality due to formula-feeding
started coming in, that there was an unavoidable re-examination of
this attitude. Although..... as Susan as so carefully suggested....
the information was there - and ignored - all along.
