Peter Edwards is right of course.
I typed, “bee hive attacked by vespa velutina” into ‘youtube’ and up it came, “Japanese Giant Hornets attack European Honey Bees nest.” The commentary mentions that European bees have no defence against this predator, which led me to believe, as I am not an entomologist, that it was our invader.
Part of the problem is the multitude of names used for this insect,
Asian Hornet, Japanese Hornet, killer hornet, giant asian hornet, etc. It would be so much simpler if everyone used the label “vespa velutina”.
