In many hospitals I have worked at (not just Baby Friendly ones and not just in Canada), we open a 3 oz bottle, pour 3 - 5 ml or so into a medicine cup, put the lid on the bottle and add the time and date it was opened. The formula was not contaminated and the bottle is in the medicine room. The next person needing a small amount of formula, (of course the first choice would be to get the mother's expressed milk) looks at the opened bottle. If it was opened less than an hour ago, she can then use what she needs and put the lid back on. If it is more than an hour since the bottle was first opened, it is thrown out and a new bottle is started. Also, a great way to teach cup feeding instead of leaving several bottles and teats at mothers bedside and a great opportunity to discuss the size of the newborns tummy.
Works very well,
Renee (in Vancouver, Canada)
