A request:
Does anyone have a reference on the unusual occupation of women (or the
occasional toothless old man)? This role as a "pap-suck" involved applying
the mouth to relieve the breasts of a mother with engorgement or
"congestion" (probably blocked ducts) or to draw out inverted nipples. This
role tends not to be mentioned, except incidentally in correspondence or
reports about transmission of syphilis, i.e. in rare cases where this person
happened to have secondary syphilis and infected the mother, who then
infected her baby, her partner and family. Most of the time, when there were
no untoward consequences, this occupation was largely invisible in the
literature.
Please copy any replies to me privately.
