I used this a bit with my sister who lives in Australia (I am in Canada). When she had her twins we chatted several times in those first few weeks. Some of the sessions were when she was still in the hospital. I found it was nice to talk face to face, but I couldn't see clear/close enough to see details about latching. It was hard for her to position her laptop in a way for detailed viewing. For the most part it worked well for sharing general information, but I wouldn't be comfortable using it in a difficult case.

A couple of articles in JHL last year highlighted the potential for using computers and mobile devices with cameras to make consults easier for moms. Unlike a regular phone call, a call on Facetime or Skype (or other videoconferencing equipment) would allow the LC to see what's actually going on while allowing mom and baby to remain in their own home. I can definitely see the value in working this way, and I would love to hear more about anyone's experiences trying this.
