Lisa, I was going to tell you that galactosaemia is one of the very few
conditions that *is* counted as a total contraindication to
breastfeeding. However, I looked it up to be certain of my facts, and
it seems that the variant you said this baby had - Duarte galactosaemia
- is a more benign variant, and some experts believe babies with this
condition can safely breastfeed, although there currently seems to be
very little hard information one way or the other. So, there is a
chance. But she should wait to discuss it with the metabolic expert
before doing so - this is a very obscure and specialist subject and the
results of galactose consumption in galactosaemia are very nasty.
