Babies who can't breathe usually can't eat. Grunting is a sign of
effortful respiration, the baby is voluntarily using the diaphragm and
chest muscle movements to try to help push air out of the lungs, rather
than let those muscles work involuntarily. The staff was
oversimplifying, researchers now think it's more a biochemical change
during natural labor that causes fluid to be resorbed from the lungs,
rather than mechanical squeezing, or perhaps in addition to mechanical
squeezing. It's amazing how well most babies do once they recover.
If a baby never does feed well, then perhaps the transient tachypnea
(rapid breathing) or grunting have other causes - such as aortic arches
or rings. I've had several kids in my practice be diagnosed with
abnormal aortic arches after 'unexplained' respiratory difficulties that
affected their bf as infants.
