Nancy Mohrbacher raised important points about "corporate spin" and the fact
that when there is research & development (R&D) to launch a new or adapted
product, it is promoted heavily as someone has to pay for all that R&D - the
consumer (hospitals). We also need to be critical of exactly *what* is
measured, and whether that is relevant (except as a selling point). If you
are happy with a gadget and then along comes a new version of it, especially
if it is heavily promoted as "better", it makes sense to be skeptical.
"Better" for whom?
My comments apply to other objects, not only the pump discussed by Nancy and
others. It pays to be skeptical.

I left the corporate world in July and don't really want to get in the
middle of it again, but there are several points to know about this topic:

1) The Journal of Perinatology article about the Symphony Premie Pattern
(http://www.nature.com/jp/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/jp201164a.html )
compares it only to the Symphony 2-Phase (2.0) pattern, which was
introduced into NICUs all over the world without any research on its
effectiveness in mothers who were establishing milk production by
pumping exclusively. All of the research on the Symphony 2.0 pattern
until this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18778208 (in which the
single-phase pattern yielded more milk more quickly than the 2-phase
pattern) was conducted on mothers with established milk production who
were breastfeeding a healthy baby.
2) If you compare the study results of the mothers pumping with the
Symphony Premie Pattern with the original single-phase pumps, the milk
yields are comparable.
3) In other words, the Symphony 2.0 pattern is much less effective at
establishing milk production in NICU moms than the original single-phase
pumps, and this information was only released after the expensive Premie
Pattern program card was available for purchase.

What has been shared so far on Lactnet is the coorporate spin on this
information. Rather than focusing on how ineffective the Symphony 2.0
pattern is for NICU moms, the emphasis is on how much "better" the
Premie Pattern is. When all you hear is the spin, it can be difficult
to tease out the fallacies in company-funded research.
