It's that time of year in Scandinavia; Nobel prizes being sprinkled about,
and of course this one, announced a few days before the Oslo committee
announce who gets the Peace Prize. I have to thank Elisheva Urbas for
alerting me to it. Those of you who grow weary of banging your head on
brick walls, take heart. Though this is not the main reason Ina May is
being recognized, she has informed the awards committee that this is one of
her current missions. As a midwife and an admirer of Ina May, it's
especially gratifying.
"She also promotes breastfeeding and fights against hospital routines which
unnecessarily separate newborns from their mothers, as well as puritanical
attitudes which discourage many women from breastfeeding. In some U.S.
states it is still unusual for breastfeeding mothers to be seen in public,
and some mothers have been threatened with arrest for doing so."
This award is well deserved.
