From Nov 1996 to sometime in 2002, I was coordinator of the Louisiana
Breastfeeding MediaWatch Campaign (USA). Many states had such a
coordinator. I do not know if this activity is still going on in an
organized fashion. It was alot of work, but I thought it was very
successful. I had many letters published in various big city
newspapers, for example, and mainstream magazines like Redbook. (All
this I lost to Hurricane Katrina, unfortunately). I certainly do not
want to take this on again, however, it is a very worthwhile endeavor.
The way we did it was the local or state ILCA chapter (or any other
breastfeeding org or individuals can do this) would alert me to any
breastfeeding item (positive or negative) in the media, be it tv,
radio, print, internet. Either I would write a letter or the person
alerting me would do it, or both of us, or many of us. Usually it was
me who did it and I was very careful to be professional, concise, etc.
Even praising the media outlet for positive info. I believe some of
this was going along on lactnet in those early years of lactnet and
you may find some of this in our archives if you search mediawatch.
