I had a case a couple years ago with the Depo Provera shot seeming responsible for a low milk supply. A third time experienced breastfeeding mother got the shot about 2 weeks postpartum. She saw me for low supply about a week later. She didn't want to pump and baby nursed well, so she decided to aim for 8-10 times a day of nursing and supplement ad lib. She tried some herbs that may have helped some. At about 6-8 weeks later, when the Depo hormones would have dropped to be about the same level as the mini-pill, her supply was back to normal and she went on to exclusively breastfeed.
I hunted around for some research and found Hale's comments in his archives helpful. He explains theoretically why too early can be a problem for some, but not all moms. My guess is that there is a small percent of women who will have problems and it wasn't enough to show up in the research.... or the research was poor.
