We have two pumps with the Preemie 1.0 program Card in it. I thought it just stayed at the light, fast, One Drop vacuum level for a full 15 min, then turned itself off. It turned itself off when I set it to dry out some very wet tubing that needed more than 15 min. Yes, I did crank up the vacuum for the dryout duty. And many of the mothers also crank up the vacuum on the Preemie card because "nothing is coming out".

This card is for moms who have preemies less than 34 weeks, and useful for the first 3-4 days before switching to the standard 2.0 card (2-phase), according to Medela's instructions.
Of course the moms at my hosp only use it for 2, maybe 3 days, before discharge. Then they use WIC's Lactina at home and our Symphony 1 or 2 times during NICU visits. It's an expensive card and our moms can't use it to it's designed purpose.
I can't check it out with a vacuum gauge - hosp won't buy one for me.

But when you need another pump for moms of babies at 34 weeks and older, you can use this pump. Just ignore the "Start Preemie" message and it switches over to the Standard 2.0 program of all the other pumps.

Wishing the moms would really DO what the Stanford videos show for "hands-on" pumping & expressing. The most I've seen them do is a couple of quick 2-finger pinches or a couple of quick 1-fingertip skin strokes.

I am aware of the 2 phase expression system which I believe is
approximately 2 minutes of the stimulation phase and then switches to
the expression phase (and mothers can switch it themselves if they've
letdown). Can anyone shed more light on what is different in the
premie pattern? I would love to try a similar pattern. Our hospital
uses the Ameda Elite pumps which we/mom can control the speed and
vacuum on a continuum with a dial.
