Many of the mothers I meet with have coconut oil at home and already use it for skin care, so it's a fairly easy one if she really feel that using something on her nipples will help. In terms of being allergenic if ingested by baby, coconut oil is a common ingredient in infant formula (that saturated fat has to come from somewhere!) - not that infant formula is exactly low in allergens, but presumably, it's considered safe enough to ingest in larger quantities than the small amount mom would apply to nipples. That said, I think if you have a real concern about yeast or infection, a referral to a doc for assessment of the cause and something like APNO would be my suggestion over coconut oil.
