Lisa,

My oldest was just dx with this.  It can be set off by an infection (my son had tons of blood work done) or just bad genes (unfortunately my son’s case).  It can last for a few years or be forever and usually shows up around 19 to 24 years of age.  Taking antihistimines every day is the only treatment (along with keeping an epi pen handy – we discovered this at a water park when my son nearly passed out in the lazy river).  Allergy testing is only done if the blood work shows high levels of esophils (spelling is off) and I think IgE in the blood (none of which my son had).  Hope that helps.
