~~~ I forgot to say that this baby was supplemented appropriately by the
mom from the moment I walked in - she was open to doing that and understood
why, though it was devastating to her emotionally. The point I was trying
to make was that some babies who have been underfed for this long don't have
the stomach capacity to take in "normal" sized feeds for the first 12-24
hours or so of being willing to and beginning on the mom's part, the
appropriate supplementing, but often yes babies can "leap frog". I use this to
mean that baby really gains and goes into catch-up mode when given a little
time to get used to eating normal amounts of food. Sorry if I made it sound
like appropriate supplementation was not a critical part of recovery.
