Hi Liane
I expressed for my fourth child, for various reasons he couldn't
attach to the breast. I found that he drank 800ml per day from about
8 weeks till 2 years, and then my supply got too low, so he had to
make do with less. In all that time, he gradually became interested
in solids, but ate very little before 14 months, same as my other
three. He never ate the regular toddler sized meals, I actually think
they are too big. Babies are meant to breastfeed, so are toddlers,
they are meant to gradually increase their solids intake, but they are
also meant to remain on the breast well past 2, so no need to take big
amounts of solids when they are getting lots of great nutrition from
breastmilk. My fourth child had very similar eating habits to his
brother and sisters, I suspect they were also all having about 800ml
of breastmilk at 2 years, they were just having it as lots of tiny 2
to 5 minute feeds throughout the day, while he was having 6 bigger
milk feeds a day. In an effort to keep his bottle feeding as much
like breastfeeding as possible I never offered him more than 12oml per
feed, usually less. I found he would drink whatever I offered him, no
matter how much, but was happy with around 100mL at any time of the
day, so I stuck around that. It worked really well.
So sounds like this little one is having much the same as any
breastfed baby, we are often having mums tell us their doctor or
someone is worried about how much food the baby eats, yet bub is
thriving on breastmilk, I really think it is the normal way to go, and
the amount of solids recommended is much more than a breastfed toddler
needs.
