Hello.  I am an avid Lactnet lurker, but have never posted before.  It is rather intimidating to do so now, as I am in absolute awe of all of you!!

My sister's relative gave birth to her 3rd breastfed child, a boy, on September 20th.  Baby has been tested and diagnosed with Isovaleric Acidemia.  I have not seen this baby, as they are not related to me and live several hours from me.  According to reports, baby is breastfeeding and gaining well.  (She breastfed her other two children at least one year.)  The cause for investigation was strange lethargic episodes in the infant while still in the hospital post-birth and lengthy stretches of infant sleep after discharge.  If there were other concerns, I do not know what those were.

I apologize for the great lack of details!  :)  I searched the archives for this disorder, but found limited information.  (This does not surprise me; it is very rare.)  What are the ramifications for a breastfeeding mother in this situation?  Specialized diet?  Specialized supplements for baby??  Is breastfeeding routinely recommended or discouraged??   If you would be so kind as to share any experience you may have, or websites and support groups you are aware of, I would greatly appreciate it.
