1st 24 hours - I assume you are doing glucose/sugars. If baby latches and
gets a bit of colostrum you will find the glucose stable, then why would you
want to supplement with anything? If baby unable to latch, then mom hand
expresses colostrum into a spoon and that is fed to baby. Colostrum is
powerful in tiny amounts. I know there is a lot of disagreement on what a
baby's glucose needs to be in the first 24 hours. I believe 50 is unreal
and artificially inflated by only looking at formula babies. 30-40 is
probably a sensible goal in first 24 hours, with 40-50 after.
Volume is not the issue in the first few days, frequency at breast (non
separation of mother and baby, skin to skin etc) and baby latching and
sucking is what we are looking for. This is all my personal opinion based
on what I have read and learned over the past 45+ years. Pat in SNJ
