Dear Lactnet Friends:
For the mother who feels overwhelmed and touched out......attachment
parenting puts the burden of infant care on the mother because in Western
society, the mothers are usually far from their support networks.
Moms that want to do their best are truly overwhelmed. They need aunts and
sisters and girlfriends and grandmothers and neighbors around who can wear
the baby. This social network is rare.
I feel this is one reason for swings and pacifiers: moms do need another
body around to help with the newborn, but don't have it. Mothering a
newborn is intense. Remember: it takes a village to raise a child.
So where can this mother find a village?
warmly,
