Ditto here, Jan! And our hospital is requiring calculation of per-shift productivity using some wacky formula that requires sending people home if we fall below 100% productivity. There is no "down time"

Subject: Cost of Baby Friendly Ed
Jane suggests:
<<EXACTLY!! If education for Baby-Friendly was put together in a modular
fashion so that it could be consumed in snippets of down-time with nurses
able to enter and leave the module, it would allow for the education to occur
in a more cost-effective fashion. >>

I agree that it seems like an excellent idea on the face of it, but....
Down-time? What down-time? Hospitals have made sure that their staffing
is tight enough that most nurses are doing the work of at least 1.5 if not
2. There is no down-time any more. If there ever was. At the hospital
where my husband is Director of Pharmacy, they are "down" two pharmacists and
2 techs. He's had to keep a terrible technician that he should have fired
because she is a warm body and with the hiring freeze he can't get anyone
else. Three units are without nurse managers, so each of the other nurse
managers are taking over 2 units.
