Caprylic Acid is derived from Coconut Oil. It is also known as Octanoic Acid.

Caprylic acid is an anti-fungal, eight carbon, medium chain fatty acid. Some sites call it a short chain fatty acid. According to some websites, it is also found in some mammalian milks including breast milk.

Caprylic Acid can be taken buffered with magnesium and calcium. It is also available as a supplement along with psyllium husks and sunflower oil (known as Caproyl) and in other supplements on its own. It can cause intestinal upset as well as die off of candida (temporary). Most caprylic acid products do not recommend it for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women (probably because of the intestinal irritation that can accompany the use or else CYA). I would suspect that the buffered forms are more tolerated than unbuffered (as in the case of buffered vitamin C).

Some people find that incorporating coconut oil into their diet can be very effective in treating underlying candida infections.

I know women who have used caprylic acid with excellent results, for chronic candida, and know women who have used coconut oil along with other treatment for thrush, with excellent results. The coconut oil users said that the most relief came only when they incorporated it into their treatment.

The medium chain fatty acids found in Coconut Oil are now being used in research studies in the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and there is interest in its effect on the progress of ALS.

This mom may want to be under the care of a good holistic care practitioner if she chooses to go this route.
