I may be unpopular for this, but I don't think formula is worthless. For
the babies whose moms will not/cannot nurse them, it is, as I believe George
Kent pointed out, "nutritionally adequate". It meets basic needs and keep
babies who need it for whatever reason from starving or being severely
malnourished. How I wish we had milk banks for every baby to receive what their
bodies are expecting, and not have to put up with merely "adequate"
nutrition, even while formula also lacks so much of what makes
species-specific milks and breastfeeding so critical. It's probably true that formula must
be one of the most overpriced items out there considering the components.
But worth is, sadly sometimes, what people or governments are willing to
pay. We also live in a time where one can spend lots of money on water, by
putting it in bottles, corporations are making tons of money, while in many
parts of the world there are water wars going on, or coming.
I do like the "nutritionally adequate" phrase since it allows me to support
whatever breastfeeding the dyad is experiencing and supporting mom's
efforts and intentions, while also allowing me to expand on how mother's own
milk and breastfeeding is so much more, and why baby's body is expecting
it....:)
Peace,
Judy
