      Hello breastfeeding supporters,
You may not recognize this name but his obit appeared today in The New York Times [Sunday] .
Dr Latham was born in what is now Tanzania where his father was a doctor in British colonial service.Dr Latham went to medical school in Ireland and worked in the US and Britain before returning to Tanzania to practice medicine in rural areas. He was appointed director of the nutrition unit of the public health ministry. He was alarmed by the push of the formula companies to expand their marketing to under developed countries. He co wrote a report with Ted Greiner about the pitfalls of feeding formula in resource -poor countries ,citing the many advantages of breastfeeding. His cause was taken up by several health groups led by the WHO which developed a set of guidlines which we now refer to as theInternational Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes. He was a prominent figure in the Nestle Boycott. In 1991 ,he helped found the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action to explain the benefits of breastfeeding around the world.Dr Latham also taught nutrition at Harvard,at Cornell ,wrote books on nutrition and did consulting work in Africa,Asia and South America for the Who ,UNICEF, UN Food and Agriculture Org.and the World Bank.
