Oral syringes are OK. It's syringes that can be used for injections that are not OK.

Subject: alternatives to syringes for storing and administering and sending home pts. with EBM
Hello all,
I'm hoping someone with wisdom on the nuances of JCAHO and the Baby Friendly guidelines can enlighten us on ways to store, administer and send home pts. with EBM. Our understanding is that syringes are not o.k. to give to pts. to go home with according to JCAHO. We are a Baby Friendly hospital and want to know how other hospitals deal with minute amounts of thick colostrum that have been expressed and either need to be given to baby on the spot or possibly given to parents to take home when baby is discharged. We really appreciate any feedback about this. How do you feed it to the babies? By spoon, dropper, syringe, finger? How do you give it to parents to take home when baby is discharged? In little colostrumscollector bottles, in capped syringes, in capped droppers? Thanks so much,
Barbara Holmes RD, IBCLC, CD(DONA)
