Prevention of caries starts with the mother. Since dental caries is a disease mediated by bacteria (Mutans streptococci (MS) and lactobacilli) and because it can be a vertically transmitted infectious disease, prevention should start with addressing the oral health of the mother prenatally. Mothers who have a high level of MS have a greater risk of transmitting the bacteria to their child at an earlier age than mother with low levels.
