My understanding is that baby perks up, shows mom he is ready for greater volume, and goes into the "second day feeding frenzies". Baby is NOT willing to stick to any 3-hour schedule. Usually, if she nurses by baby's cues, and the latch is comfortable, and she can observe swallowing, and baby is making increasing numbers of diapers, this is norman and will pass. Unfortunately, it tends to begin during the night hours when mom wants to sleep. She would rather swaddle and put babe in the crib but babe just wants contact with mom's body like he had for the last 9 months.
I usually tell moms that on Day One baby would rather sleep than eat. But on Day Two, baby would rather eat than sleep!
If she thinks more on "nurturing" at the breast rather than "feeding" with the breast, they will usually get along fine.
What would she do if she were in a remote area and had NO access to those little 2oz bottles? Nurse again. It's Nature's plan.

This is a general question for hospital-based LCs (irrelevant whether or not they are RNs : ) Has anyone else noticed that babies are often fine on the first day, content sipping on a small amount of colostrum, but that on the second day they baby is frantic, appearing completely unsatisfied, and mother begins to get upset and frustrated too? It could be that I am only seeing the natural recovery from a hospital birth, but I often spend lots of time with a newborn on day one, leave for the day thinking everything is going well, and then on day 2 all has taken a negative turn.?
Who else has noticed this and what are your theories?
Isabella
