Leslie, I was recently gathering information about donor human milk banking
from sources from around the world. I've seen $4.00/ounce, $4.50/ounce,
$2.25/ounce in recent references to US HMBANA milk bank fees charged, with
most references noting the fees charged don't recover the total cost of
processing the milk. I have also come across a couple of pieces of
information about fees in the UK and France:
- UK: From the HMBANA newsletter, 2008, in an article on Human Milk Banking
in Europe by Gillian Weaver: "In the UK neonatal units can obtain donor milk
from an in-house milk bank or from the nearest milk bank if it supplies
other hospitals. There is usually a charge of approximately £100 per litre
plus transport costs (this is the equivalent of $5.86/ounce)."
- France: From Murielle Bourbau, HM4HB France admin: "Since March 18, 2009,
a litre of breastmilk (fresh or frozen) is sold for 80 euros and 100 grams
of freeze-dried breastmilk is sold for 133 euros. These prices are defined
by an official decree." The order that sets out the pricing is here (en
francais):

I know you didn't ask this question but I like this presentation from Dr.
Nancy Wight which includes an assessment of the cost of not using human
donor milk in the NICU.

At the recent FDA public hearing into the possibility of regulating milk
banks, a presentation, "Public Health Perspectives on Donor Human Milk
Banking" from Laurence M. Grummer‐Strawn, PhD, Chief, Nutrition Branch, US
CDC, placed the cost of donor human milk at $13.59/100ml. He cited "*Jegier*
BJ, *et al."*

I hope this is helpful. I think it's important for us to have good
information about the costs of processing donor human milk, the fees
charged, whether or not the fees fully cover the costs, and of course the
most important bit of data as noted by Dr. Wight and others - the
comparative cost of not providing donor human milk.
