Is there a good answer for this situation?: it is confirmed by drug test at delivery that a mother is taking illicit drugs but she insists that she is turning her life around and plans on quitting and wants to begin to establish a milk supply for when she is clean. She is educated on the significant dangers of illicit drug use for her baby and states understanding. If the healthcare team assists her to initiate pumping and dumping in the hospital with advice to continue until clean, but later she doesn't comply and the baby is harmed, is the hospital liable for helping her establish a milk supply that was dangerous to her baby? Alternatively, if the healthcare team will not help her initiate milk expression have they not infringed on her personal rights? What about the baby's rights for a safe milk supply?
Thank you,
Mary
