These pages are almost certainly generated by companies who hire
'writers' at rock bottom prices - as journalist and writer in my
'other' life I sometimes come across the ads asking for people to
apply for these jobs. No professional writer would normally dream of
taking these gigs, but I know of some who have done so when
desperate! The gig is to churn out webpage copy, written with SEO
(search engine optimisation) in mind, so you are told to include
keywords in your copy. This then attracts adverts generated by web
bots.
There is zero quality control of the writing. I don't suppose the
author is who she says she is, anyway. She could be a 16-year-old
school student in Korea, or India, or Thailand....earning maybe 25c
an hour on their laptop.
I don't think there is anything we can do about any of this. If a
reputable agency or other 'name' puts out rubbish bf info, then yes,
we should say something. The reputable 'name' has, by definition, a
reputation they want to uphold. But these sites that are there just
to make some unscrupulous person money? No - don't bother. And don't
keep going to the pages, either, as every hit generates income.
Happily, I do see people becoming more and more web-literate - as the
web becomes an everyday tool in more people's lives, they develop an
awareness of what sites to trust, what information to check, and
it's clear to me just from looking at it, let alone reading it, that
the 'internet health library' is not a trusted source.
