Could also be impetigo or something similar. This is a highly contagious
skin infection (viral, I think). I had it once, on my face, and it also
appeared over night. No history of cold sores or whatnot.
Child should be seen asap by a doctor and should have the lesion cultured,
as that is the only way to know for sure what it is. Might be that nursing
can continue if the lesion is properly covered, but a doctor should diagnose
it first and can help mom determine if it can, indeed be covered. If it is
impetigo, one has to be much more careful than if it's 'just a cold sore'
because though both are contagious, impetigo is wickedly contagious.
