There's never been a reported case of botulism from honey used on
wounds, BUT, there's no research on using raw honey on nipples. That
said, there is a medical grade gamma irradiation sterilized honey
(cooking or heating honey destroys its antibacterial properties) called
Medihoney. Any C. botulinum spores are destroyed by the radiation. I've
used it with moms who have mildly infected nipples, or nipples with deep
wounds in danger of infection. I do advise moms to rinse it off gently
with warm water before feeding the baby. Moms who are suspicious of
antibiotics or hydrogels are usually happy to try the Medihoney, and it
has been helpful in providing pain relief, moist wound healing, and
infection prevention (and even treatment if the infection is not extensive).
