I'm writing a paper about the peer-to-peer milk sharing movement...I think
there are some parallels between how those mums and the founders of our
early peer-to-peer breastfeeding support orgs were perceived.

First of all, Karleen, I wondered what made you ask this. Were you accused
of being a radical woman with dangerous ideas?
 
Secondly, I emailed Marian Tompson, founding mother of La Leche League and
asked her.
 
Her reply:
 
As to how physicians felt about this, it really depended on the physician,
how he felt about breastfeeding and if he was comfortable with a lay person
giving information to his patients. This varied from doctor to doctor. As we
built up our credibility and breastfeeding became more common, so did the
medical communities comfort with LLLI. 
 
Mrs. Tompson also would like a copy of the 1985 Physician's survey someone
else mentioned in which 29% of doctors had characterized La Leche League as
"overzealous/extremists".
